Dental Hygiene: Promoting Healthy Habits That Stick

Dental hygiene is a crucial aspect of overall health, and while the majority of our patients at North Sydney Dental Practice are adults, instilling good oral care habits in your children from a young age can have a lasting impact on their well-being. Teaching children positive ways to maintain dental hygiene not only ensures a bright smile but also prevents various dental problems in the future. In this article, we will explore effective strategies to introduce dental hygiene for children, making the process enjoyable and sustainable for them.

Start Early and Lead by Example

The journey to good dental hygiene should begin as soon as the first tooth emerges, and it’s crucial to get healthy habits embedded as part of the daily routine. Whilst many parents aren’t overly concerned about the instances of cavities and caries in ‘baby teeth’, a recent report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare showed the highest number of preventable hospitalisations in 2021 were in children aged between 5 – 9 years old.  To get babies used to the feeling of brushing, parents should gently clean their baby’s gums with a soft wipe or infant toothbrush. As their teeth come in, encourage brushing with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste. As they grow, ensure you involve them in your dental hygiene routine; children often imitate their parents, so when they see caregivers taking care of their teeth, they are more likely to do the same.

Make It Fun

Introducing fun and creative elements to their daily routine can transform dental hygiene from a chore to an engaging activity. Consider using colourful toothbrushes with their favourite characters, playing their favourite song for two minutes while brushing, or making a game out of flossing. Associating positive experiences with oral care can make children look forward to brushing and flossing.

Educate Through Visuals

Visual aids are powerful tools to educate children about dental hygiene. Use videos, books, or interactive apps that explain the importance of brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist. Simple, age-appropriate explanations can help children understand the consequences of neglecting their oral health and the benefits of maintaining proper hygiene.

Create a Reward System

Positive reinforcement is an effective way to encourage children to adopt dental hygiene habits. Create a reward system, such as a sticker chart, where children earn stickers for every successful brushing or flossing session. Once they accumulate a certain number of stickers, they can receive a small reward or treat. This approach helps reinforce the idea that oral care leads to positive outcomes.

Schedule Regular Dental Check-ups

Visiting the dentist regularly is crucial in maintaining good oral health, regardless of your age. Make dental appointments a regular part of your child’s healthcare plan as soon as they begin their oral hygiene routine. A friendly and positive experience at the dentist’s office can alleviate the fear and anxiety associated with dental visits. Regular check-ups also allow the dentist to identify any issues early and provide appropriate guidance.

Emphasise the Importance of Diet

A balanced diet plays a significant role in oral health. Dental caries in children is the most preventable oral disease accounting for 99% of all non-fatal disease burden amongst 5-14-year-olds, meaning some positive changes to oral hygiene and diet could make a huge difference.  Teach children about the impact of sugary and acidic foods on their teeth and gums. Encourage healthier snack choices like fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. Limiting sugary treats and beverages can prevent cavities and promote overall dental hygiene.

Promoting dental hygiene in children is an essential investment in their future well-being. By starting early, making the process enjoyable and incorporating positive reinforcement, parents can help establish dental care habits that stick. Through education, regular dental check-ups, and a focus on a balanced diet, children can grow up with healthy smiles and a greater understanding of the importance of maintaining their oral health.
