Anti wrinkle injections, botox and dermal fillers were once considered a taboo topic – for obvious reasons. As they rose in popularity amongst celebrities, so did the horror stories and photos of treatment going wrong. Thankfully, for the most part – and in the right hands, we are past the days of permanently frozen facial features and immovable smiles.
What are they made of?
Anti-wrinkle injections are comprised of a purified A type protein bacteria called clostridium botulinum.
How do they work?
They work by affecting the signal from the brain to the muscle. They selectively bind with the nerve endings on the muscle and prevent any contraction from occurring. By doing this they relax the muscle. By relaxing the muscle, you release the tension on the overlying skin resulting is a very smooth appearance of the skin and eliminating some of the wrinkles.
How long do they last?
These wrinkle relaxers consistently work for a period of the 3- 4 months. Sometimes they wear off quicker depending on the strength of the muscles in your face. They generally wear off quicker at your first visit, and if you continue the treatment you often see a longer lasting effect.
Why would I have these at the dentist?
We often get asked this question, but the reality is that we are perfectly placed and have extensive training in head and neck anatomy. We work with injections and we know that the face is an important part of getting the right cosmetic results. Your smile isn’t just your teeth. Our practitioners have had extensive training in all these procedures; we have been integrating facial aesthetics for over 5 years now. Dr Hargreave has completed Advanced training in injectable fillers and has a long history of happy patients, both male and female.
Will people notice?
In most cases, no! When used correctly, anti-wrinkle injections aim to subtly reduce natural wrinkles and lines in the face creating a fresher, natural appearance. Light bruising is common in some, but not all patients.
Does it hurt?
I have a confession to make (any many of my patients have heard this in the past!) I can give needles all day, every day, but as soon as it’s pointed at me I become a chicken. I can say with all honesty, having these types of injections are relatively pain free. You can expect to feel the initial prick, but quickly dissipates.
After injections?
We recommend not lying down, or touching the area for at least 4 hours after injectables to prevent the protein from moving. We also suggest not exercising for 24 hours after the procedure. You can still wash your face gently, but recommend avoiding facial treatments to prevent tenderness.
